Margaret Schnebly Hodge

Biography: MARGARET SCHNEBLY HODGE

Long appreciated as an abstract figurative and landscape painter using a dark and rich palette and with a philosophical preoccupation with the concepts of physical and emotional restraint, confinement and a striving for a sense of freedom, Margaret Schnebly Hodge has traveled a long and very interesting path of achievement in her career to date with the 2020 selection of a large colorful diptych as the first work in the permanent collection at the new Lemerand Center at Daytona State College, Florida.

Born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1953, she moved with her family to Daytona Beach, Florida a few years later when she was age 2. Athletic with a love for the outdoors as a child and young adult she explored the wide open wild and rugged Florida landscape under blue skies or in rain which influences her art today. Always known as “the artist” in grade school, Hodge looked seriously to the making of art as a means of personal self-expression in high school and later at Daytona State College where she attended with an art scholarship from the Daytona Beach Art League and eventually at the University of Florida where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Fine Arts.

Hodge has exhibited her work in a recent state tour through 2020 including: The Museum of Florida Art and Culture at South Florida State College, Avon Park, FL; The Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts at St. Johns River State College, Orange Park, FL; The Rao Musunuru M.D. Art Gallery at Pasco-Hernando State College, Newport Richey, FL; The Mattie Kelly Fine & Performing Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College, Niceville, FL; Dr. Gene Prough Center for the Arts at Chipola State College, Mariana, FL, and; The News Journal Center at Daytona State College, Daytona Beach, FL. Her work has been included in a vast number of professional artists exhibits in major art venues and can be found in significant private and pub¬¬¬¬lic collections.

Along with her fine art career, Hodge has held several key art director and management positions in both the private and public sectors where she applied her artistic energy and skill on major projects and programs. She has received significant artistic awards and honors including a State of Florida Artist Enhancement Grant, has helped steer major art focused community programs and development, and has held top office in several not for profit state-wide arts organizations.
