Hawk Watch at the Birdbath

I’m a former newspaper writer and editor who often illustrated my feature stories with cartoons, either hand-drawn or digitally produced. I’m also a bird-lover. Since moving to Florida nearly 15 years ago, I’ve enjoyed watching birds splash in our neighbor’s outdoor ceramic bath. I’ve also noticed them scattering when a hawk circles above. This daily scene in my neighborhood inspired my oil painting, “Hawk Watch at the Birdbath,” a cartoon depiction of all manner of birds (including a chicken, because I grew up on a Wisconsin farm). The over-vigilant sentries keep looking up as the birdbath sits empty below. The painting’s viewer is actually the menacing hawk, which is why some of the birds gaze straight into your eyes.

Birds cool themselves in a birdbath, chirping their delight. But what if a hawk circles above? Will she pick off one of them for lunch? They fly back to the safety of the tree where they gaze upward with suspicion. The scene is emblematic of a hot, lazy day, a summer in the sun.
